NGPC
Come join NGPC as we visit the Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark in Birmingham, AL. Walk through the ruins of a slag iron furnace and associated equipment. Entry is free, but there is a $20 fee required for photography, so come prepared. They open at 10 am CST (11 am EST) but are situated next to railroad tracks, so come early if you like to watch or shoot trains. There is a place to eat across the street. We can shoot together as a group, but you’re free to go off on your own.
The drive to Sloss Furnaces is approximately 3 hours from Dawsonville, so we recommend carpooling. Here is the map of the location, and directions from Atlanta:
Take I-20 West to Birmingham. Take exit 130B and turn left onto 1st Avenue South. Follow 1st Avenue South as it merges into 5th Avenue South, then 4th Avenue South, then 3rd Avenue South. Follow 3rd Avenue South for 1.2 miles and turn right onto 32nd Street South. Proceed over the railroad tracks and turn left into the first gate after crossing the railroad tracks. The gate is in between a parked black locomotive and our spray pond. Follow the road to the back of the site to the Visitor Center parking lot.
The railroad crossing dividing 32nd Street S and 32nd Street N often has trains passing. Please note that 35th Street South has a bridge that crosses over the railroad tracks. Access can be gained at 4th Ave South (if you are on the south side of the tracks).
